Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
